Donut chart in 10 min

WHAT IS A DONUT CHART

A donut chart is almost identical to a pie chart, but the center is cut out (hence the name ‘donut’). Donut charts are also used to show the proportions of categories that make up the whole, but the center can also be used to display data.

Doughnut charts let you show the relationship between parts of several sets of data to the whole. Each doughnut shows a series of data. Slices of the same color belong to the same category

WHEN SHOULD YOU USE A DONUT CHART?

Like pie charts, donut charts can be used to display different data points that total 100%. These are also best used to compare a handful of categories at-a-glance and how they relate to the whole.

If you have 4 or 5 categories it is better to go for the pie chart. but if you have 2 or4 categories, it is better to go for the donut chart

HOW TO MAKE A DONUT CHART

prerequisite

1. I am using tableau public: https://public.tableau.com/app/discover

2. This donut chart is created using a sample dataset of superstore provided by tableau

Donut chart for displaying category-wise profit and sales in each region

1. From the data source add the superstore excel file. In that there are three tables, I am choosing the orders table for my donut

2. In sheet1, select the dimension category and measure sales using CTRL .then click on show me, and it will show the chart we can use. from that choose a pie chart.

3. Then put the region dimension in the column, and remove the sum(sales) from the size in the mark pane.

4.Create a calculated field

5.Now put the no of record to the row and change the measure from sum to minimum and duplicate the minimum of no of record again in the row

6. change the graph type of the second one to a circle in the mark pane and remove the category and sum of sales of the second one, change the color to white

7. Now change the size pie in the first graph to bigger and change the circle graph to dual axis

We can adjust the color of the pie and the size of the circle

8. we can bring the region to the middle of the donut chart, for this put the region in the title of the circle chart and select the format >pane>alignment(middle center) and hide the axis.

9.now add the sum of profit to pie chart

10. Now we can give background color to the sheet. Go to Format>shading

10. play with all the shading features like the sheet, row, and column to make your sheet more eye-catching

So following these steps we can all make eye catchy visualization to display our analysis from dataset.
